16/02/2023 Daimonji (CC) 2-2

This armoury report was supposed to be up 3 days ago, but due to real life matters, it got delayed. Late is better than never, so here it is~

This week, I’ve decided to take <Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn> for a pin for 2 reasons. One, Daimonji limits the number of CF any players can win in a month to 1, so winning is not a top priority given I’ve already claimed my CF <Spider’s Bite> this month; two, been playing <Dorinthea Ironsong> for the past month and it’s a good time to take a break so maybe when I return to her, I’ll discover something that I missed while playing her.

Round 1 Fai, Rising Rebellion

Equipment used: <Halo of Illumination>, <Courage of Bladehold>, <Gallantry Gold> and <Snapdragon Scalers>

A familiar face and a seasoned <Fai, Rising Rebellion> player. I was actually quite happy to face off against <Fai, Rising Rebellion> in round 1 playing <Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn> because aggro match ups are supposed great for him, also within the 16 players present, there were 5 <Iyslander, Stormbind> which is a rather bad match up for me and it’s lucky to be able to dodge them round 1.

Game went by without too much hiccup in that I was able to assemble a double <Lumina Ascension> combo before falling below 10 life and crawl back to about 23 ish while bringing my opponent down to 7. From there on I jus blocked and waited for my <Beacon of Victory> and swung in for the win.

One key decision that I was not really sure about was cracking my <Halo of Illumination> on T0 and allowing about 5 points of damage through for my opponent to get the first card into my soul. And I believe this decision along with another greedy play was what costed me my second game, I’ll elaborate further in the next game.

Round 2 Fai, Rising Rebellion

Equipment used: <Halo of Illumination>, <Courage of Bladehold>, <Gallantry Gold> and <Snapdragon Scalers>

Again a familiar face and a very dedicated Ninja player. Opponent won the die roll and chose to go first, I once again cracked my <Halo of Illumination> T0 to start my soul count and took 5 damage.

The build my opponent was on was a lot more to the face compared to the opponent last round. The played cards like <Double Strike> to really poke through he damage and he saw 2 of his three <Art of War> which helped him a lot in pushing in damage.

The greedy play that I believe costed me the game was I tried to preserve two cards to charge my soul and in exchange I took 7 damage. I already had 2 cards in my soul and given that I’ll get another card into my soul on my combo turn, I should have just blocked and wait for my combo piece.

Opponent blocked as much as he could and stayed at 40 life for the majority of the game while my second combo piece only came after T8 or something like that and by then I was already at 13ish life, so opponent forced card from me by threatening lethal and I had to block thereby losing my chance to combo off.

So I did a single <Lumina Ascension> turn and it was no where near threatening enough to force block or even gain much life back.

Had I not been greedy in getting card into my soul and wait for my combo piece to come, the game could have been won, the 7 life and 5 life I lost from cracking <Halo of Illumination> really costed me the game.

Round 3 Iyslander, Stormbind

Equipment used: <Helm of Sharp Eye>, <Courage of Bladehold>, <Nullrune Gloves> and <Snapdragon Scalers>

Weapon Swap: <Raydn, Duskbane>

What is to come will definitely come, given there were 5 <Iyslander, Stormbind> within the 16 players present. So here comes the pain.

All ice heroes are a pain for <Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn>, but <Iyslander, Stormbind> was the clear worst among the 3 because she can give <Frost Bite> at instant speed and that really is throwing a spanner in our running machine. The swapping into <Raydn, Duskbane> was a also hedge against this, because there’s almost no way to combo off against her even with the banning of <Hypothermia>, cards like <Channel Lake Frigid>, <Blizzard> and <Cold Snap> can all just stop our combo cold.

I tried my best to present damage while pitching only to fused <Aether Icevein> but opponent just had all the arcane damage he needed to finish me off. The game was close those, I was able o bring him down to lethal range and he killed me with activation of <Storm Striders>.

Definitely feels a lot more winnable compared to pre-banning, but still tough match up nonetheless.

As usual at Daimonji, Mark offered a round 4 pairing for us to enjoy the game more, so here we moved on to playing the 4th game of the night.

Round 4 Dash, Inventor Extraordinaire

Equipment used: <Halo of Illumination>, <Courage of Bladehold>, <Gallantry Gold> and <Snapdragon Scalers>

<Dash, Inventor Extraordinaire> can be a good match up if they try and race you with <Maximum Velocity> and <Hanabi Blaster> and go full boost but can be rather challenging if they go control and can set up their items quickly enough. Lucky for me, opponent started with <Teklo Pounder> in play and tried to race. I was basically throwing all cards from hand to block as much as I could and waited for my triple <Lumina Ascension> turn.

Due to the lack on on-hit effects, I could optimise my blocked in not wasting a single point of blocking value and making full use of me equipment.

And so my triple <Lumina Ascension> turn came and my starter was a yellow <Bolt of Courage>. Opponent didn’t block it as he knew that was my combo turn, because I took in all damage from last turn. With the additional card draw, I was able to activate my <Gallantry Gold> and swung for 8 times of 5 damage each, opponent had 3 attack actions in hand so my total damage got pumped by additional 4 and I presented a 46 damage turn and just killing my opponent right there.

2-2 is not a great result, but there’s definitely more learning points from this armoury than those I played with <Dorinthea Ironsong>.

I feel like some adjustment need to be made to the deck, <Rout>, <Enlightened Strike> and <Remembrance> just feels out of place in a <Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn> deck and the I feel like I might need more “poppers” against <Dromai, Ash Artist>. I’ll most likely adopt Jimmy Le’s list from next week onward and play for a better result~

I didn’t get to play <Spirit of Eirina> out, but just the inclusion of it in the deck presents a potential T1 combo which I’m definitely looking forward to playing out~~
